Job Description


Lumen is seeking a highly motivated Business Analyst & Applications Administrator to implement, manage and maintain informatics tools supporting pre-clinical research and development.

As a member of a small and highly collaborative informatics team, this position will partner with diverse R&D stakeholders at every stage of the product development pipeline. The position will play a key role in gathering requirements, documenting changes, deploying technical solutions, training end-users, and providing scientific end-user support. The successful candidate will have a strong service mentality and focus on user-solutions. He/she/they will advocate for data management best-practices and champion the value of quality electronic record keeping and information sharing.

We are looking for a dynamic and driven individual with strong communication and project management skills. The successful candidate will need to quickly develop an in-depth understanding of biotechnology laboratory operations, data management platforms, and regulatory compliance guidelines as part of identifying key user requirements and strategically considering the technical solutions for addressing them. The ideal candidate will have an ability to move between high-level systems considerations and in-depth technical knowledge to successfully implement solutions that improve access to information, follow best practices, and move R&D teams toward greater efficiency and scalability.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


The major tasks for this position are as follows:


  • Quickly develop an understanding of Lumen’s various functional groups and an in-depth knowledge of its scientific data management systems.

  • Partner with subject matter experts and informatics team members to enhance the company’s ability to acquire, process, visualize, and analyze scientific data.

  • Manage software system life cycles - drive processes to gather requirements, document changes, deploy solutions, train end-users, and evaluate acceptance.

  • Perform detailed analysis of software use cases, outline process maps, identify problems, and collaborate with others to find opportunities for improvement.

  • Carryout re-designs and optimizations of existing workflow tools as needed to support evolving research and development activities.

  • Coordinate with Informatics Team lead and data engineers to define deliverables, perform risk assessments, and resolve issues.

  • Communicate with diverse stakeholders to ensure the right data is collected in the optimal format.

  • Administer key scientific software platforms - respond to user help desk requests, update configurations (e.g., schemas and templates), and communicate with third parties.

  • Author and update technical documentation including informatics-related user manuals, change management records, configuration specifications, and validation protocols and reports.

  • Help develop and enforce best practices across scientific computing platforms.

  • Facilitate use of a common syntax for scientific materials and processes.

  • Identify information gaps within Lumen’s scientific data management systems; engage with stake holders to complete records and prevent future gaps.

  • Develop and maintain training materials for data management systems and workflows.

  • Lead training sessions for new hires and as part of system updates.

  • Help to build a company-wide culture that values data capture and sharing.

Desired Qualifications & Requirements


Required Education and Experience:

  • B.S. degree in life science, engineering, or another technical field

  • 3+ years relevant work experience in business analysis, software implementation/administration, project management, and/or laboratory operations

  • Experience working in biotechnology laboratories

  • Experience with laboratory data management systems (e.g., ELNs, registries, LIMS)

  • Proficient with Office 365 and other cloud productivity software


Desired Experience:

  • Experience building and managing scientific workflows

  • Basic proficiency with a scripting language (e.g., Python, JavaScript)

  • Familiarity with relational databases and knowledge of SQL

  • Experience with BI/analytics software and creating dashboards

  • Familiarity with GxP, CFR 21 Part 11 and systems validation
