Staff Accountant

Job Description

We are looking for a motivated and dedicated individual to join our accounting team as a Staff Accountant.  This individual will work closely with our Accounting Supervisor and will undertake a variety of accounting tasks including journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations, fixed assets, processing A/P transactions, financial analysis, and audit support.  This individual will also participate in supporting the efforts to implement new financial systems. 

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, a good communicator and can manage multiple priorities to meet financial close and compliance deadlines.      

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

The major tasks for this position are as follows:

  • Perform general accounting functions related to period close, including preparation of journal entries
  • Prepare assigned monthly account reconciliations according to month-end close schedule and resolve identified items
  • Maintains the company’s fixed assets including the purchase or disposals of property and equipment, recording of monthly depreciation, and performing an annual inventory of fixed assets
  • Assist with the processing of vendor invoices and check runs
  • Issue POs according to internal processes
  • Support the processing of payroll
  • Participate in updating or creating accounting processes, procedures, and internal control documentation
  • Assist with monthly grant reporting and invoicing, including tracking grant expenditures and preparing budget-to-actual analyses
  • Participate in testing and documenting workflow for new or enhanced system implementations
  • Ensure that supporting documentation is maintained to remain in compliance with accounting policies and controls
  • Provide documents and schedules requested by external audits
  • Assist with state and local reporting obligations
  • Work on special projects as directed

Desired Qualifications and Requirements 

Education and Experience:

Requirements

  • 4-year business degree with an emphasis on accounting
  • 1 -3 years of experience in an increasingly responsible, detail and deadline-oriented accounting position
  • Understanding of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Solid organizational skills, including multitasking and time-management
  • Understands the importance of internal controls

Desirable skills

  • Proficient in the use of MS Excel and other Microsoft office products
  • Experience with ERP accounting software is preferred

Physical Requirements
